Immerse Yourself In a World of Reading During Your Staycation
People from around the world choose the Orlando area as their destination during the holidays, spending their Christmas vacation amid the sun, warmth, and attractions that have made this area famous. So where do people who live here go? If you’re fortunate enough to have an extended amount of time off the next couple weeks, why would you go anywhere else? If you choose to take a staycation, there’s no better way to relax and unwind from another busy year than catching up on your reading list.
While some of the national chains have gone away over the years, Orlando still has quite a few local book stores. Certainly, you could just purchase books online, but there’s just something about choosing from thousands of titles, relaxing in the book shop while previewing your favorites, and heading home with a car filled with literary windows to new worlds. One of the more unique book stores in Orlando is Dead Beat Books. The establishment succinctly describes itself by “two literature loving deadbeats operating a used bookstore out of a co-op in Orlando.” Come out tonight to see author Ashley Inguanta read from her new collection of stories in “Bomb.”
Don’t tell the local establishment, Bookmark It, that reading is a dying art. By organizing events, promoting local authors, and highlighting that “the end of the book is just the start of the story,” they’ve proved that reading and writing is alive and well in the City Beautiful. Another resource for local authors is provided by There Will Be Words. On the second Tuesday of every month, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., the organization offers a free event and invites the best writers in the state to appear. One of the barriers for people when they want to write a book is not having the knowledge of getting their work published. A nonprofit, independent publisher that’s based out of Orlando, Burrow Press can help get your works published and noticed by the masses. So, get outside to enjoy the amazing weather with a great book from some of the talented authors that call Central Florida home. You won’t be disappointed.
