Now Is The Perfect Time To Clean Your Refrigerator
You probably don’t think about it often, but refrigerators are the unsung heroes of your home or office. Often we overlook the crusty leftovers that we’re not quite sure what they are anymore and the extremely overripe fruits and vegetables that have so much mold on them they could be donated to a lab at UCF. Well, if your refrigerator is starting to smell funky it’s time to clean it today.
Since 1995, November, 15 has been designated as National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day. Rumor has it that this ‘holiday’ was established by the Whirlpool Corporation to tell consumers that they should get rid of anything smelly, slimy, or stale before the holiday season starts.
Where do you begin if you have a fridge that would be declared a biohazard? Besides getting a HAZMAT suit, first you’ll need to take everything out (Yes, even the dozens of soy sauce packets from Chinese takeout) and decide what you’re keeping and what is getting tossed. Next, it’s time to get down to the nitty gritty. The folks over at HGTV recommend cleaning your fridge with a homemade cleaner consisting of:
a gallon of hot water 1 cup clear ammonia, ½-cup vinegar and ¼-cup baking soda. Remember, not only will you need to wipe down the shelves and the notoriously filthy crisper drawers, it’s highly recommended that you vacuum in the back of your fridge as well. If your refrigerator has a water and ice dispenser, now would be the perfect time to replace the filter. It’s not a glamorous job, but cleaning your fridge with your housemates could possibly be a fun activity, especially if you play the “Guess when this expired?” game.
