Our Orlando community is extraordinarily generous. For National Day of Giving, some rad local charities and how they give back to the world.
Since everyone seems to focus more on the “thanks” and less on the “giving” on Thanksgiving, National Day of Giving gives us a chance to do a little something extra for somebody else, and to actually follow through on those fuzzy feels we’ve been feeling this past week. What better way to give than to help support great local charities? It’s helpful and satisfying to be involved and supportive of good works in your very own community. There are so many wonderful Orlando or Central Florida based charities, one is sure to speak to your kind heart!
1. The Center Orlando fights for LGBTQ equality, and provides programming to “empower, educate and entertain” the LGBTQ community. They are currently looking for volunteers to help out for a few hours a week. If you’d rather give from home, check out their website for a link to donate some cash.
2. The Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) is a human rights organization that specializes in workers’ rights, and has spearheaded a number of internationally recognized programs including their Fair Food Program and anti-slavery campaigns. Their website lists many ways you can help out their causes.
3. Harbor House of Central Florida offers shelter and support for victims of domestic violence, as well as a 24-hour crisis line. Their website has a link to donate on the homepage.
4. Back to Nature Wildlife Refuge rehabilitates and releases injured and orphaned wild animals and educates the public on protecting our environment and its many other-than-human residents. You can even donate and taking a self-guided tour of their refuge!
So, after stuffing your face with all that turkey over the weekend, think about how you can actually give back to your community this week, and check out one (or all!) of these great Orlando charities.
