Orlando To Become Mecca For Same Sex Weddings?
Can you feel the love? Home to the happiest place on earth, Orlando, Florida is about to burst with pride. With the recent overturn on the ban for same sex marriage in Florida, the word on the street is that Orlando could become a mecca for same sex marriages. Florida has always been a destination for people who want to get married in a more tropical climate, near the beach, and of course Walt Disney World! Wedding planners are preparing for a rapid growth in the wedding planning industry following the “Vowed and Proud” mass wedding ceremony presided over by Mayor Buddy Dyer this past Tuesday, January 6th.
“I’m seeing a pent up need for this, and I think it will explode,” said Elisa Delgardio, wedding planner with Orlando-based Flair for Affairs and Wed in Style. “It could be huge for us, because Orlando is such a destination market.”
New York City reported a $259 million first-year impact after same sex marriage was legalized. This could mean a drastic boom in the city beautiful’s economy and job market. Marketing to gay couples means that a lot of local wedding planners are having to change the names of some their businesses, updating websites and re-thinking the nature of the wedding planner industry in itself. Michael Thomas, owner of JM Events in Orlando, recently got married to his same-sex partner Rustin Davis in New York and had a ceremony at Paradise Cove in Lake Buena Vista.
“We are gay-owned and operated, and we’ve done hundreds of same-sex ceremonies and receptions, but it wasn’t legal in Florida until now. We do expect a new influx, because a lot of people wanted to wait until it was legal,” Thomas said.
This is an amazing moment in Florida history and the desire for same sex weddings in Orlando is way overdue. We can’t wait for the boom of wedded bliss. No matter how big or small the ceremony it’s sure to be a fabulous affair in sunny Florida.
